What Are You Thankful For?

Today has been an extra-ordinary day, in my opinion.

On my way to work, I witnessed the breaking of a gorgeous pink dawn. Anyone who knows me will tell you I probably live for dawn. It represents a fresh start. The sky broke out in layers and layers of baby pink and blue and silver linings. It was a wonder to behold.

How many people would have noticed that?

The air is crisp and the world smells like it has just been washed, thanks to a rather heavy downpour over the night. No wonder I slept like a baby, after getting home tired but happy from a beautiful Kizomba session.

How many people notice such things?

In the morning as per my normal tradition, I was up bright and early to get my 3 sheets of Morning Pages done. Instead of writing down mumbo-jumbo from the day before, I found myself reflecting with a gratitude-filled heart on all the aspects of my day that had gone well, been less than pleasant and the lessons I had learnt. Today I am grateful for:

  • Being alive at this very moment. It's an exciting time in history and there is lots of space to be exactly who you are.
  • Periods of change and transition in my life. I have made some big changes and this is only the beginning. Change is scary and uncertain but necessary and exciting at the same time.
  • My family- who have taught me a lot of lessons this year. My immediate, extended and adopted family that has grown to include kindred spirits online.
  • I have more than enough to live a comfortable life and to thrive.
  • My yoga practice.  I keep growing stronger and stronger everyday but the greatest benefit has come in from how I am changing and shifting on a personal level.
  • My creativity which I appreciate as  a true gift from God.
  • Quiet moments to be still and reflect on the goodness and grace of God.
  • My dance class yesterday that helped me feel light and happy.
  • A closet that's full of clothes that I love and a personal sense of style and unmistakable individuality.
  • My essential oil business because nothing makes me happier than sharing with people how these bottles can improve your wellbeing.
  • The silent knowing that the Universe has my back and that God supports me.

My list could go on and on.

It's easy to get caught up in the drama and turmoil of everyday. Catch your breath and start by listing 3 things you are grateful for when you wake up and when you go to bed at night. I picked this practice up from Oprah years ago and for a long time I kept a physical gratitude journal. It was always amazing to see the shift in perspective once I started naming everything - the most mundane to what would appear silly.

May the words from my favorite hymn remind you to Count Your Blessings always.

Count your blessings, name them one by one

Count your blessings, see what God has done

Count your blessings, name them one by one

And it will surprise you what the Lord has done

If the only prayer you said today was Thank You, that would be more than enough.
